Satellite Salon
When Lynn started her position at Southern Utah University, she wanted to bring her musical world closer to her students in Cedar City, Utah. Her desire to merge these worlds manifested itself in the launching of her Satellite Salon Series. This concert series happens twice a year, in September and January at SUU, and brings in an artist for a small residency for the weekend.

The artist arrive into town on Wednesday or Thursday, and stays through Sunday. On Friday, the artist gives a masterclass to the both university and high school students, followed by a Q & A session led by Dr Vartan, in the style of “Inside the Actor’s Studio."

Dr Vartan asks the artist about their life and their musical path, how they got to where they are and what advice they would give to students on the same path. Friday night finishes with a party at Dr Vartan’s house for the artist, music department faculty and students who attended the masterclass.

Saturday morning the artist and Dr Vartan present an outreach event called “Music Unwrapped."

This is an event where community members can come and get some hands on instruction and a more intimate looks at the artists and instruments.

This part of the series encourages young people to share in the music ina very informal setting.

Families with children of all ages are welcome.
In 2009, our September artist was Bridget Convey, who did a whole program about prepared piano and the Sonatas & Interludes of John Cage.
